INTERNATIONAL SPRINT SERIES
The series would consist of a minimum of 5 countries, the countries will be New Zealand, US, Japan, Malaysia, Canada, France, Hong Kong and Australia.
The series will be teams sprint, kieren, sprint and women’s points’ race.
SCRATCH RACE (MEN 15KM / WOMEN 10KM)
Scratch racing was introduced to the World Championships and World Cups in 2002. The Scratch Race is one of the most exciting events; it begins with a massed start of competitors who race the assigned distance with the placing determined during the final sprint, taking into account laps gained.
Tactics are important in this event with endurance riders keeping the pace fast and furious in an effort to eliminate the sprint specialists who in turn will try and shelter within the group to conserve their strength for the final laps. The final 10 laps are where courage, skills, positioning and tenacity of the competitors comes to the fore as the fast sprinting field surges to the finish line.
THE HANDICAP RACE/WHEEL RACE
The major race of just about every track meet in Australia is the Handicap, or 'Wheelrace.' The Handicap race is run over 2000m. The race consists of a number of riders starting at the same time, but at various different points on the track! The 'Scratchmen,' starting at the 0 meter line, are the only riders who actually ride the entire distance. All riders are held up at the start, and they're pushed (the bigger the better) until they get going. The beauty of the race is that it gives every rider an equal chance of winning the event, and thus attracts a large field. Also, it tends towards close race finishes, where the Out-markers are hanging on for dear life, and the Back-markers are storming home.
SPRINT (MEN & WOMEN)
The sprint is one of the oldest cycling events making its first appearance at World Championships in Chicago in 1893. It is a classic short distance event in which two or more riders cover three laps. Only the final 200 metres is timed. The special requirements in the sprint are strength and speed. The key is tactics. Sudden and dramatic changes in speed, standstill attempts, and feints are typical ways to surprise an opponent. Riders obtain a seeding through the qualifying 200 metre flying time trial.
KEIRIN (MEN & WOMEN)
Keirin was created in the 1940’s and is the Japanese version of the traditional sprint event. Up to seven riders compete over 2000m. A special motorised bike called a derny leads the field for the first 1400m starting at 30km/h and bringing the riders up to a speed of 50km/h (25km/h to 45km/h for women). Cyclists manoeuvre for the best position before the derny leaves the track. Then the battle of strength, speed and courage begins.
THE ELIMINATION RACE
In every lap the last rider across the finish line is pulled out of the race until only three riders remain. The remaining three riders are given a free lap to manoeuvre themselves before the final all out sprint to the finish line. Keep your eyes peeled to the back of the field that's where all the excitement lies in this event.
